The E-lab Sample Referral Tracking Software (ELSRT) is a software-based solution with features that support a modern laboratory’s operations. Key features include—but are not limited to—workflow and data tracking support, flexible architecture, and data exchange interfaces, which fully support its use in regulated environments. The core function of the ELSRT will be the management of samples and the documentations involved. The workflow is typically initiated when communicable diseases (initial focus on Yellow Fever) are suspected at a health facility on presentation by a patient from linked community, and the designated Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO) for that Local Government Area (LGA) is notified. The sample is collected at the health facility at which point documentation of the ID, disease type, patient demographics etc. are done. The sample is then sent through a third-party logistics company to reference laboratory where it will be analyzed and resulted. When sample is received in the laboratory, it will be registered in the ELSRT. The registration process may involve accessioning the sample by affixing a label to the sample container. Various other parameters such as clinical or phenotypic information corresponding with the sample are also often recorded. The ELSRT then tracks chain of custody as well as sample location.
